Welcome to Alton's Autumn Walking Festival 2024 - Monday 14th October to Sunday 20th October
Alton Walking Festival takes place every May and this year celebrated its 12th year. After the success of previous years we are holding our 5th Autumn Walking Festival, a week-long event showcasing a selection of handpicked walks from May which are ‘Simply The Best’. Alton’s Walking Festivals are truly friendly walking events, ideal for enthusiastic walkers, relaxed wanderers and curious explorers of all ages.
Alton is a vibrant Walkers are Welcome Hampshire town which truly has community spirit at its heart. Situated at the source of the River Wey and enjoys a stunning rural backdrop at the gateway of the South Downs National Park, Alton is known by many as 'Jane Austen Country' with its close ties to its charming neighbouring parish of Chawton. The festival is the ideal opportunity for the local community and visitors from further afield to meet like-minded people, explore the Town and its surrounding villages and discover the superb Hampshire countryside with its abundance of wildlife and rich cultural heritage. You’ll be spoilt for choice!
The town is easily accessible by public transport, has direct road links from Winchester, Basingstoke and Guildford and is located just off the A31 with ample parking throughout the town.
All walks must be booked in advance by booking online (scroll down for the walks), emailing support@alton.gov.uk or call 01420 83986.

Slow walks will be at 2 miles per hour or less
Moderate will be 2.5 to 3 miles per hour
Brisk walks will be 3+ miles per hour - please check the speeds when booking walks
- All travel costs (buses, trains and parking) are at the expense of the walker.
- Please make sure you have the appropriate clothing, footwear and you carry water.
- Many of the walks are in the countryside/woodland so rest stops for toilets may not be possible.
- Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of your walk.
