This 2-day weekend course is open to all levels and is based on classical, traditional and academic approaches to painting the landscape. We will look at various tried and true techniques to analyse and build colour and compositional studies, leading to a final refined painting. This will include how to create believable depth of field and proportions within a painting, where the landscape reads as a 3D space on a 2D plane.

The course will include progressive instruction in the technical skills required when using oil paint, the blocking-in of basic structural form in addition to the use of tone, colour, and mark-making to achieve a convincing representation.

If the weather allows it, we will combine working outside 'en plein air' [Grey Lynn Park is a short stroll away] with work continued and developed in the school studio. Beginning by the referencing of photos or images supplied by the tutor or from the student's own source will allow practical painting time, as we work through a generation of ideas and painting approaches discussed in class.

This will be a creative, stimulating and rewarding workshop, offering you the skills to broaden your painting experience and to continue an ongoing development.
