This course is for emerging artists wanting to further their understanding of the contemporary art industries in Aotearoa/New Zealand, and how to more strategically develop their careers within it.
At the completion of the course participants will gain a more informed ability to:
The course is comprised of presentations that cover general principles, the analysis of industry examples, and space for questions and open discussion.
Course requirements:
Desktop computer, laptop or smartphone (must have webcam and microphone so you can use Zoom)
Internet connection
Zoom account (you can use a free version)
Materials:
Pen and paper for note-taking
A basic computer to write documents and develop your digital portfolio
Schedule:
Session 1: Course introduction: the arts industry in Aotearoa/New Zealand, tips and techniques for developing your portfolio, and participant introductions.
Session 2: Developing a proposal for exhibitions, awards, scholarships, residencies, funding, sponsorship, etc.
Session 3: Visibility: marketing, web presence, social media, media coverage, photographic documentation, etc…
Session 4: Writing key documents: artist statement, exhibition statement, media release, bio., and C.V.
Session 5: Bringing it all together: developing a revised individual career plan, navigating breakdowns and breakthroughs, and reconnecting with your goals and core motivations.
Session 6: Where to from here: tips, life hacks, individual questions and feedback and group discussions. An open session.
Note: This is a provisional framework and may be adjusted at the tutor’s discretion throughout the course in response to the evolving needs of students or other factors.
