A day for Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals working with children and young people who have both SEMH and SLCN. The aim of the course is to ensure practitioners have a clear understanding of issues and implications in order to deliver effective, evidence-based practice.

Developing a clear understanding of the implications of SEMH plus SLCN is relevant to every speech and language therapist working with children and young people. Having an understanding of how to help children and young people develop skills to manage their emotions, and improve social problem solving is of universal relevance. This masterclass is the place for everyone to start their CPD journey, with progression options available for those seeking to develop their practice further.

Course Topics

  • Understanding why children and young people have SEMH
  • What the research says about why they might also have SLCN
  • the implications of this for their future development
  • The SLT role; considering the evidence base, and the role of others
  • Assessing CYP with SEMH
  • 'Universal' approaches to supporting children and young people including
    • A preventative role
    • Developing positive interactions
    • Helping to develop emotional skills
    • Communication skills for improved social interactions
  • Opportunities to reflect on current practice and how to develop services

More Details

Melanie Cross is a Consultant Speech and Language Therapist who works with children and young people who have SLCN and SEMH. She was the lead author of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists clinical guidelines on SEMH for SLTs.

The day includes a 2-course lunch, and certification for CPD purposes.
