This Masterclass looks at practice, equitable assessment and treatment for children who speak two or more languages, and experience speech and language difficulties affecting both/all of their languages. This evidence-based course examines this challenging but rewarding area, providing not only theory, but how to apply this to professional practice.
The course is suitable for speech and language therapists, teaching staff with a special interest in bilingual children, and other professionals interested in meeting the needs of bilingual children with speech and language difficulties
This masterclass is presented by Dr Sean Pert, Senior Lecturer in Speech and Language Therapy at the University of Manchester.
Dr Pert is a speech and language therapist with more than 20 years experience in both the NHS and Charity sector. He has been a highly specialist speech and language therapist, a service manager, clinical adviser, trainer and student coordinator. He has published research papers, clinical guidelines, book chapters and assessments on bilingualism, as well as delivering specialist services to bilingual children and their families.
Dr Pert works at the University of Manchester and teaches on Clinical Education, Clinical Phonetics and Bilingualism. He has won the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists’ Sternberg Award for Clinical Innovation on an unprecedented three occasions, as well as The University of Manchester’s Making a Difference Award for Social Responsibility for Outstanding Contribution to Equality and Diversity. Dr Pert was nominated for Most Inspiring Lecturer by his students.
