This is an opportunity to view some parts of this very special building that are rarely seen. On this Tour you will be able to see some of the special collection early Bibles in Welsh, Irish and English that have been brought together in one place for the first time for a conference of the Cathedral Archives, Libraries and Collections Association of UK and Ireland.
This will include being able to see the first Welsh Bible printed. It was given to Westminster Abbey Library in 1588 and is now in Wales for the first time. You will be able to see this special Bible in the Treasury exhibition case at the Cathedral. It is in very good condition. Alongside it in the display is a 1620 Welsh Bible from the Cathedral collection. That one is very well used as a working Bible it was intended to be.
You will also be able to see the first Old Testament produced in Irish. This was translated by William Bedell in 1685. It has been loaned to St Davids Cathedral by the Cotton Library in St Carthage's Cathedral, Lismore.
We will let you know which places that we visit can be seen at other times, once you know where and how to look.
After the Tour there will also be the facility to visit the Cathedral Library for anyone on the Tour who asks for this. The Cathedral Library is usually open to the public on Monday and Friday afternoons.
The Cathedral Shop in the nave will be open on the days of the Tours between 10am - 4pm. Books, cards, prints and gifts are on sale with lots more information and images of what you will have visited.
The Cathedral Refectory will be open 9.30am to 4pm, serving coffee, teas, hot chocolate, Welsh cakes in a range of sweet and savoury flavours, and other light lunches with mulled wine. Cooked Welsh Breakfast is served in the Refectory between 9.30am and 11am.
All visitors are also welcome to join the Cathedral services.
