A fabulous walk that starts at Whiritoa Lagoon then over to Waimama Bay and then heads up into the bush and over to Papakura bay (Shipwreck Bay) and takes in the remnants of the "Hipi" shipwreck from 1976. Experience some truly amazing coastal views out to The Alderman islands, beautiful Pohutukawa trees growing on the cliffs and native birdlife. Be prepared to wade through the lagoon (knee to thigh deep depending on tide).

Bring food and drink including lunch, wear appropriate shoes. Children aged over 12 welcomed with parent or guardian.

Instructions

Date: Saturday 11th October 2025
Time: 09.00am – Waihi Beach Surf Club Parking Area for transport to Whiritoa.

Cost: We are a not-for-profit organisation, so any donations are greatly appreciated either via our website shop, our Givealittle page or with cash on the day. To cover the cost of transport, there is a small fee of $10.00.

This is a Grade 3-4 walk and will take around 3 hours. A good level of fitness is required You should be prepared for uneven surfaces with some steep parts and an optional short section 3-4m of rope decent to Papakura Bay Beach. Please also be prepared to wade through the lagoon! Please wear appropriate shoes, bring your own snacks/lunch and a rain jacket in case of light rain on the day. If we have heavy rain forecast, we will look at postponing and I will notify you all by email as soon as I can.

Caps Available We do have the official ECHO Walking Festival Caps available to purchase for $20, so if you would like to grab one (while stocks last), please let us know.

Health and Safety
• We hold basic first aid kits but please ensure you bring your own medication for wasps and bee stings and any other medical issues.
• We will take small breaks on the walks.
• There will be front and rear people with high viz vests on, guides are there for your health and wellbeing.
