Ashtanga Yoga is a flowing and dynamic yoga practice which develops strength, flexibility, balance and mental calm, through a synchronisation of movement and breath (vinyasa) to make a moving mindfulness meditation. This style of yoga is practical and experiential; anyone can enjoy the benefits without need to subscribe to esoteric philosophies. The first series of Ashtanga Yoga is called 'yoga chikitsa' which translates as 'yoga therapy'. Through practice of the Primary Series a state of good physical health is achieved, which opens the door to improved energy, mood and well-being. This course will introduce the fundamentals of the Ashtanga System, preparing you for a lifelong practice.
This course is particularly suitable for people who are new to the practice or who have been attending drop-in led classes, but would like to develop their understanding of the practice. We will start from the fundamentals of the breathing system, building in more postures and transitions (vinyasa) week-by-week. We will take time to explore each posture so students will understand how to work effectively and safely and how to modify, when appropriate, according to their own particular needs. At the end of the course you will receive a free two-class pass to continue developing your practice with Sheffield Ashtanga Yoga.
This 6-week course costs £50, with £25 payable immediately as a deposit to secure your space. The remainder can be paid in person on the second week of the course. A full refund of the deposit is available up to a week before the start of the course.
NB: Ashtanga is suitable for everyone; being strong or flexible is not a prerequisite. However, a group approach may not be suitable if you have any injuries or ailments, or have let your fitness lapse. Please get in touch if you have any doubts.
