FLS webinar: Communication Assistance | Assistants

The use of communication assistance within the Family Court is becoming more prevalent. Knowing how to spot a client or a party who finds some communication tricky and could benefit from use of a more accessible approach is beneficial for everyone in the Family Court. The appointment of a Communication Assistant (CA) can be important for those who have communication challenges within the Family Court context. During proceedings a CA can help a number of ways including educating and providing recommendations for how the environment and talking can be altered so communication is more accessible. CA’s may also be involved in interviews and meetings, attending court to help the person understand what is being said and to simplify documents in a way that can be more easily understood. Together with Moretalk the FLS have developed some easy read documents for family lawyers to use in their day-to-day work. This webinar will go over the easy read documents and provide them to participants. It will also discuss the use of plain language by all and the benefits of communication assistance and how that might be used within the Family Court.
