Steve Bretel has run classes for several years at Forgan, and also teaches residential courses, and online.
This course offers beginners and more experienced watercolourists the chance to learn, experiment and develop their skills to increase confidence and enjoyment while working with a wide range of subject matter. Watercolour can be a tricky medium to get to grips with, but practicing the essential techniques such as wet in wet, dry brush and dropping in, will soon develop your confidence. Through lots of demonstrations and instruction, you will start with basic drawing skills, and progress to colour selection, composition, masking out, spatter, stamping and exciting special effects with salt and wax. Please bring your own materials if you have them, otherwise advice will be given in the first class about what to purchase, so that by week two everyone will be well equipped.

You will need a selection of materials:
There is a huge range of brands and materials available both online and in stores. I’d advise going with a reputable brand (such as Winsor & Newton) - especially until you know exactly what you’re looking for - as they have a good quality mid price range (as well as more expensive), but there are many other equally good brands too. And of course, it’s up to you to decide how much you want to spend. Here are some suggestions:

PALETTE: A simple one with recesses for paints and a large well for mixing will be fine.
WATERCOLOUR PAINTS: I prefer to use tubes - usually Winsor & Newton brand. A good standard selection is: alizarin crimson, lemon yellow, Prussian or ultramarine blue, burnt umber, raw sienna, Payne’s grey and light red.
WATERCOLOUR PAPER: My preference is for Saunders Waterford, 140lb/300gsm weight - cold pressed (also referred to as ‘NOT’ which means it’s not been hot pressed). For my own studio work, I buy full-size sheets which I then cut down. Other makes are fine, but opt for good quality 100% cotton rag content that’s 'acid free’. Paper can be supplied ready cut, or if in pad form, I’d recommend not getting one smaller than around A4 size. Smaller pads are great for outdoor sketching though.
BRUSHES: Watercolour - round about size 6, and a flat (or ‘one stroke’) brush around 3/4 inch width. Any good brand, mid price (such as Winsor & Newton Cotman range) will do fine.
PENCIL: Good to have both soft - around 4B - and one harder - around HB.
ERASER: Such as Staedtler ‘Mars Plastic, and a ‘kneedable’ or ‘putty’ rubber)
SKETCHBOOK: For taking written notes and making preparatory sketches.
KNIFE: Craft knife/snap knife or similar.
MASKING FLUID (any colour)
MASKING TAPE
OTHER USEFUL THINGS: Pencil sharpener, sponge, kitchen roll, old toothbrush and other brushes,
OTHER WATERCOLOUR BRUSHES: ‘rigger’ brush, mop brush.

SUPPLIERS: Online, I usually use Ken Bromley, or Jacksons, but there are lots of other, good suppliers too. And support your local art shops where you can!

Please note that this class will run for 9 weeks with a break on 2nd and 16th May

Age range: Over 18 years
