Informations

Minimalist Ceramic Design

For the modernist or minimalist designer, or those who just like nice clean lines, this course is for you. We will explore the connection between architecture and ceramics, taking inspiration from Brutalism and its bold and dynamic forms - think The Barbican, Southbank Centre, or The Guggenheim Museum. In this course, we will reimagine both thrown and handmade forms, in order to develop your own creative process and construct bold ceramic designs.

In recent years there has been a renewed appreciation for Brutalist architecture, with its distinct aesthetics filtering into various areas of contemporary design. Ceramic artists such as Derek Wilson, Andrew Walker and Karen Rennicke have all been inspired by this post-war Modernist movement. You will explore processes developed by these artists, as well as Tim’s own research and practice, to experiment with new methods, shapes and design. For example, the "cut and paste" technique - where forms are altered and reorganised by subtraction and addition - will be a key tool for us along the way. While outcomes can be functional or sculptural, you will focus on Modernist construction, minimalist design, and the joy and versatility of our material - clay!

This course is for inquisitive makers and those looking to expand their skills beyond craft-based pottery. Over the course of 5 weeks, participants will be encouraged to develop their own creative process and explore new and different ways of working. If you are looking to experiment with form and structure, this workshop is for you.

This course is open to adults (18+). Suitable for Intermediate to Confident Makers.
