Informations

A day long workshop on media engagement with two experienced former BBC journalists, Claire Bolderson and Caroline Finnigan. They will guide you through the process of refining your academic work into a story that is accessible to a wider audience.

How do you draw people in with hooks and angles? How do you tell your story without over simplifying it? Through the day, practical exercises and examples will be used to help you get the best results. There will be plenty of interaction with the Trainers and each other.

The workshop includes an exploration of social media and how best to use it to get greater exposure for you and your work. You will also learn how to perform effectively in a media interview. Tips will be given on preparation, appearance and delivery.

There will be an opportunity for five people to be interviewed on camera. If you would like to put yourself forward for interview please fill in the attached form (under document) and send it to training@humanities.ox.ac.uk by 12th February.

The on camera interviews will be played back and constructively critiqued.

Please bring a lap-top or a tablet for the written exercises - practising how to refine and pitch your story.

Feedback from previous participants:

"Great day with @ClaireBolderson and @CMFinns learning the tricks of the media trade. Much respect for their journalistic talent #inspiring"

"Many thanks to @ClaireBolderson & @CMFinns for today's excellent Engaging Communications training session @UniofOxford"

“It was a great experience…The interviewer had done her research and asked me several excellent questions. This made it quite different from, say, practicing on camera with a friend.”

“Thank you for yesterday’s workshop, it was very helpful and useful with lots of practical advice. Most of all, it got me thinking about possible ways to maximise the impact of my research beyond academia and how to use social media to do that, something I have been thinking about for some time, but with no clear ideas before yesterday’s training.”
