Informations

The National Curriculum for history requires pupils to gain understanding about abstract concepts of substantive knowledge across periods while the OFSTED framework expects to see teaching in greater depth than before. This practical series of webinars will show how pupils can be introduced to these concepts which can then be systematically revisited wherever they occur in content, ensuring that pupils accumulate powerful knowledge around it for retrieval as they progress through medium term plans.
You can sign up for as many or as few workshops as you like, depending on need.

Workshop - 28th February 2023
Identifying curriculum pathways through Primary History at KS1 and KS2: Civilisation
This practical webinar will show how pupils can be introduced to the abstract concept of civilisation (which is listed in NC rubric) and which can then be systematically revisited wherever it occurs in content, ensuring that pupils accumulate powerful knowledge around it for retrieval as they progress through medium term plans. Reference will be made to the possible study of the nature of city living at KS1 through the study of the Great Fire of London and other events beyond living memory where one way of life clashed with an alternative one such as in the American West. An overview will be given of the development of civilisation from Neolithic period of the Stone Age onwards. This will include the overview of ancient civilisations required at KS2 (Ancient Sumer, the Indus Valley civilisation, Shang Dynasty China and Ancient Egypt). The webinar will also draw content from Ancient Greece, the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and including the curricular options of Islamic Civilisations, the Maya and Benin.

The sessions will be led by Andrew Wrenn, a knowledgeable history specialist and an honorary fellow of the Historical Association. He is an experienced teacher, trainer and writer, former LA adviser and co-author of the HA`s report on Teaching Emotive and Controversial History 3-19. Andrew recently led highly evaluated training on the impact of the new OFSTED framework on Primary History
