Informations

The Early Years Pattern Project is a fantastic opportunity to hear Dr. Sue Gifford share about how a local group of nursery and reception teachers have developed a creative and flexible approach to teaching pattern.

The project, led by the University of Roehampton,  was based on Australian research showing that pattern awareness not only predicted later maths achievement, but that it could be taught in pre-school.

Recent research has further emphasised the importance of pattern, which is now proposed as an Early Learning Goal.

This session will share some of the Pattern Project activities and findings, including some surprising responses from the children.

This work has now become the basis for NCETM early years training and materials, as well as Nrich resources https://nrich.maths.org/13362 - Developing Pattern Awareness with Young Children (Article by Sue Gifford, Published October 2017).
