Summer Solstice: Yoga, Mind & Movement for Women Workshop

Saturday, 20 June '20   2pm - 5pm
Markyate Village Hall, Cavendish Road, Markyate, St Albans, AL3 8PS
Details

The summer solstice, also known as midsummer, occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere. For that hemisphere, the summer solstice is when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight.

The summer solstice is a time of honouring the earth and the sun's blessing of warmth and light. In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras 3.26 it's written in translation, “One learns from the perfect discipline of the sun and solar system.”

The workshop will incorporate both the yin and yang to balance body and mind. You'll be guided through a dynamic mandala flow, where you are welcome to invite in free movement in celebration of this fiery, exuberant, passionate time. I always welcome intuitive movement to ensure your move in ways that suits your body and serves your energy levels. Energy-wise the summer solstice is like the full moon and is pregnant with possibility. We'll then slow down to long held, grounding yin asana. Underpinning the physical postures will be principles of mindfulness woven throughout to create a mellow, grounding and relaxing afternoon. We'll enjoy a break with some plant-based snacks and refreshments before coming to meditate for an extended period time where you will have the opportunity to work with seasonal meditation questions. Meditating in this way takes you through a series of open inquiries that will help you to:

  • Connect to the season you are in.
  • Reflect on how you wish to use your energy and set your intentions for the coming seasons.
  • Learn how to align your own energy with the prevalent energy of the season and know which time favours contemplation or action.
  • Access deep wisdom of your subconscious mind.
