Dates: 20 & 21 May 2022
Maximum Enrolment: 12

Cost: $210

This two-day workshop is open to all levels of experience and explores the joys of combining mixed media painting and drawing with cut-outs and collage. Ideal for those interested in pattern, repetition, colour and composition, and for those who have a love of paper and textile design.

Introducing some simple stencilling techniques along with a range of experimental painting and drawing methods, we'll create a fully resolved work on board that makes use of both found and made cut outs. Learn how to develop and expand your initial ideas. Learn the importance of placement and composition and the art of visual storytelling. Helping broaden your existing practice or prompting you to begin one, this short course will reinvigorate your creativity producing some unexpected, exciting and often dynamic results.

Students are requested to bring along any unwanted 'found' papers they may have e.g. wallpapers, road maps, dress patterns, wrapping paper, old books. A scalpel and small cutting board will also be useful.

Materials list
Cut Out & Composition with Zoë Nash

A basic kit of materials to get you up and going is listed here. Specialist art shops are the best
option and will provide student discounts if you mention that you are attending the school.
Recommended stores are:
• Studio Art Supplies – Crummer Road, Grey Lynn.
• The French Art Shop – Taylors Road, Morningside
• Gordon Harris – Gillies Avenue, Newmarket and Symonds Street, Auckland Central
• Takapuna Art Supplies – Takapuna

This class is a 'dip in / dip out' format in terms of materials. When you start making the work you’ll get an idea of what you may need (the more stuff you can bring to work with, the better). As a general guide, we recommend that at the very least you bring along the following:

• a selection of "found" papers e.g. wallpapers, road maps, dress patterns, wrapping paper, old books, etc…
• a scalpel
• a small cutting board
• acrylic primal, medium or PVA glue
• scissors (also available at BSA)
• general drawing media (e.g. pencils in differing weights, biro, Sharpies or ink pens, willow charcoal etc…
• selected acrylic paints in colours of your own choice (or bring along a red, yellow, blue, black and white
mix up your own colours - plus a magenta!)
• brushes in various sizes/widths (at least x1 of each: pointed, flat-tipped, larger flat-tip for large block
colour)
• A4 orbA5 pad of wet strength or watercolour paper (the DAS 300gsm or 250gsm pads are good quality

and good value)
• 2x A3 or A2 wet strength paper (can be purchased from BSA)

You will also need to purchase or bring along some chosen supports/surfaces for a self-directed project. BSA has varying sizes of artboards available to buy, or you may want to work on specific paper/s or even with raw canvas or fabric.

If working with board you will need GESSO.

Other items to consider bringing: low tack masking tape, fabric, needles and thread, paper/craft punches, embellishments, cardboard, plastic stencils.
