This program will provide an overview of the Creole and black culture of Louisiana and follows the legal career of A.P. Tureaud Sr., an attorney who was responsible for desegregating schools, universities, parks, transportation, public fountains, and opened negotiations for teachers. A.P. Jr., will also be talking about his own experiences with being the first Black undergrad at LSU and activism. A.P. will be joined by Rachel L. Emmanuel, Ph.D., an award-winning public relations professional, documentarian, author, and lecturer.

A.P. Tureaud Jr is a New Orleans native and was the first Person of Color to attend a southern state university. He taught in public schools in New Orleans, Washington D.C. and White Plains; where he was the head of special education. He has also taught at Hunter College, Pace, and College of New Rochelle. He is currently a free-lance education consultant, artist, public speaker and author. He is active in the preservation of Creole documents and the spread of Creole history

Rachel L. Emanuel has served most of her 35-year professional career in Louisiana public higher education. Emanuel’s full-length documentaries: “Journey for Justice: the A. P. Tureaud Story,” and “Taking a Seat for Justice: The 1960 Baton Rouge Sit-Ins,” have been recognized in local, state, and national competitions. Currently Emanuel serves on the Board of Directors for the Supreme Court of Louisiana Historical Society and for the A. P. Tureaud Legacy Committee. She is a charter member, newsletter founding editor, former three-time president, former LSU Legends Forum and Chapter Reunion chair, and Scholarship Committee member of the A. P. Tureaud, Sr.,
Chapter of the LSU Alumni Association.
