This is a two-part course run over two consecutive half days. To attend the whole course, please select 2-part discount ticket for £135 + VAT (you do not need to book separately onto Part 2).

Course Aims
This course provides a useful overview of what is meant by the term ‘mental health’ and explores the skills and techniques that can be used to support clients, colleagues and ourselves when signs and symptoms of mental distress may be present.

Course objectives
By the end of the course participants will:

• Understand more about the language and terminology around mental health
• Be aware of signs and symptoms which may indicate when additional support is required
• Consider how to use a 3-step action plan to assist clients, colleagues and ourselves in relation to mental health.

Part 1A, Mental health: Language and stigma:
• What is mental health?
• Language and Imagery;
• Is mental health the same for everyone?

Part 1B, Signs & symptoms: Engaging effectively and barriers to engagement:
• Introducing the 3 stage action plan: Engage, empathise, empower
• How to Engage with those who may display signs and symptoms of mental ill health
• Consider barriers that exist that can prevent effective ‘engagement’

Part 2A, Listening & Empathy: Developing skills:
• What does it mean to listen and empathise?
• Barriers to listening
• What type of listener are you?

Part 2B, Encouraging support: Empowerment and self-care
• How to empower others when assistance and support may be required
• Practical and professional support available
• ‘Self-care’ strategies and our own mental health

Methods of delivery
This course is delivered online live with a BTC trainer. It is a practical course delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and case studies, group discussion and games. Participants will be provided with e-learning supporting material including PowerPoint slide handouts, a comprehensive training pack pdf and additional resources. There is a 20-30 minute break halfway through the course.

Anyone in the advice sector who wants to support clients, colleagues and themselves when signs and symptoms of mental distress may be present.

Certificates & post course support

In the week before the course, you will receive an email with Zoom link(s) to the course and a Dropbox link to access the pack/slides which are in pdf format. You will need to download (or print) the pack (and slides, if you wish) before each part of the course.

You will need a good wifi connection and a suitable computer/laptop to access both the Zoom session and the pack throughout. You may wish to use a separate device for the pack (or split your screen) if you cannot or do not wish to print.

We recommend participants log in a few minutes beforehand. You may also wish to have a pen and paper handy to make notes.
