Love and Violence: Broadening Our Lens of Abuse in Intimate Relationships

Service providers trained and experienced in counselling, and working with people affected by domestic violence, would benefit from broadening their lens of violence in intimate partner relationships.

The Love and Violence: Broadening our Lens of Abuse in Intimate Relationships workshop is facilitated over two days by therapists working in the Men’s and Women’s programs. The workshop provides an opportunity for participants to learn how the field of intimate partner violence (IPV) has evolved, current theoretical approaches to working with those impacted by IPV, and to also spend some time in discussion on societal and relational influences. Attachment and trauma, as it relates to IPV, are also discussed, and the importance of working from a trauma-informed perspective.

The workshop is also designed to provide service providers with an opportunity to reflect on the meaning they give relationships and how that translates into a perspective on family violence. The training looks beyond labels of victim/perpetrator to examine the multiple layers of family violence. Approaches to working with people who have been victimized by IPV, and those that have used abuse in relationships are thoroughly examined. Discussion on the impact on service providers of working in the IPV field completes the two days, with a focus on self care and compassion.
