Sexual Assault Awareness; Compassionately Responding to Disclosures

This workshop is ideal for individuals working in the social services and 'helper' roles or who might be in a position to respond to disclosures of sexual assault such as teachers, social workers, counsellors, HR, medical professionals, legal professions, law enforcement, policy makers, case/support workers, RAs, and management. Formal counselling experience is not a requirement.

This full day workshop aims to provide a greater understanding of sexual assault and sexual assault trauma in order to inform compassionate, supportive responses to a disclosure. The workshop format includes lecture, short film, group discussion and interactive exercises. It is facilitated by two clinicians who provide direct service in the Sexual Assault Crisis Program working with survivors and secondary survivors of sexual violence. We will discuss sexual assault awareness from a trauma informed lens, unpack societal myths and misconceptions about sexual assault and how this might impact our response, discuss how to work from a client centered empowerment model that prioritizes informed choice when supporting someone making a decision about what feels like the best fit for them, and share information about relevant resources in the city. This workshop is most appropriate for service providers working with survivors and secondary survivors of sexual assault as there will be an intervention component, but is open to community members who would like to become more informed on the issue of sexual assault and responding to disclosures in a compassionate way.
