Virtual Spring Education Seminar #2 with Joanna Eyquem, Managing Director Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

Tuesday, 24 May '22   12pm – 1pm PDT

Details

Marine infrastructure and operations are on the front lines when it comes to the impacts of climate change, including sea level rise that is irreversible for centuries to millennia. There is growing focus in Canada, and globally, on using natural and built infrastructure in combination to reduce climate risks, with emphasis on working with, rather than controlling, natural processes. The BC floods in 2021 demonstrate the importance of this shift in emphasis, particularly as the infrastructure decisions we make today influence the future options available. The economic business case for so called “nature-based solutions” is often clear when full-life costing is considered, together with the value of co-benefits, such as carbon storage and sequestration and biodiversity gains. However, natural resilience strategies remain underused, undervalued, and outside of routine infrastructure decision-making in Canada. This presentation will explore the climate impacts anticipated in BC, available adaptation strategies and the role of natural infrastructure in building coastal resilience, building on the key findings of the recent report Rising Seas and Shifting Sands: Combining Natural and Grey Infrastructure to Protect Canada’s Eastern and Western Coastal Communities.
