Details

The 2017-2018 Developing Skills for Middle Leadership programme offers the opportunity for middle leaders to develop their leadership skills in a way that best meets their needs. The programme is suitable for both existing middle leaders and those new to a middle leadership post, as well as for aspirant middle leaders.

Over the course of the programme, you will work in mixed cross-phase groups over a 10-month period, in face-to-face sessions and through individual learning in your school. You will also have access to a learning coach who will support your learning throughout the programme.

You will develop the skills and understanding to:

  • Lead changes and improve the quality of teaching and learning
  • Reduce variability and close the gap in achievement
  • Learn with and from others
  • Identify your own personal effectiveness and how it can continue to be developed beyond the programme

During the programme you will learn about:

  • Leadership, management and personal effectiveness

  • Leadership to improve teaching and learning in order to ensure achievement for all

  • Leadership for change and sustainable improvement

  • Distributed leadership

  • Leading effective teams, addressing under-performance, getting the best out of colleagues, spotting and developing future leaders

  • Working with others within and beyond your school

You will do this through engaging in a range of activities and leadership opportunities, including:

  • Reading and reflecting on key think pieces
  • Discussion and activities in your face-to-face sessions with your facilitators and other middle leaders
  • Trying out new methods of leadership in your school
  • Learning from colleagues, discussing what you have learnt with your learning coach and feeding that into discussions in your face-to-face sessions

You will have to commit to the following:

  • Two full days over a period of 2 weeks (compulsory)
  • Three twilight sessions (attendance required at two or more)
  • A final session and celebration day (compulsory)
  • Meeting regularly with your learning coach
  • Spending time on personal learning and reflection

Some feedback from participants about what went well:

“Range of activities used, quality of teaching/resources and informal atmosphere. This has been the most worthwhile and effective CPD I have undertaken.”
“Having time to reflect, discuss ideas/worries with other people in similar positions. Both speakers were very motivational. Thank you - I have really enjoyed the course.”
“Learning and understanding what the role of a leader is. Also, fantastic opportunity to learn from others on the programme.”
