Colour is the primary vehicle for delivering emotional content in painting. This class uses Kandinsky's theories as a starting point to explore how we can compose using colour, imbuing the simplest forms with the strongest content.

Over four days, students will develop colour skills specific to their own interests, using whichever painting media they prefer. Historical examples from the Renaissance to the present day will illustrate changing thoughts on how colour can be used to investigate our experience of the world and elicit a response from the viewer.

Special attention will be given to the changes brought about by abstraction in the 20th century, from Kandinsky's bracketing of all colours between the points of blue and yellow, Reinhardt's assertion of black as a non-colour and as the absence of colour, to Frankenthaler "finding the colour as I go".

Students will be encouraged to apply the lessons to their own work in the second half of the course.
