Details

Nearly two-thirds of the people in the United States report they have had one or more traumatic events happen in their lives. People with disabilities are at an even higher risk for traumatic experiences.

Whether a person can communicate their past trauma or not, we should assume trauma has occurred and approach our support with this perspective in mind. This is not just, “something extra” that would be nice to know, but rather a critical aspect of developing required positive support strategies. This workshop will provide a view of trauma from the perspective of the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. It will explore the sources of trauma, the effects of that trauma on both a biological and psychological level, and the key ingredients for healing.

This curriculum was developed by Karyn Harvey, Ph.D, the Assistant Executive Director (Quality Supports) at The ARC Baltimore, MD and author of Trauma-Informed Behavioral Interventions: What Works and What Doesn't.
