Introduction To Scent Workshop

Details

Paws4Sports and Positively Canine are teaming up to bring a full day Introduction To Scent Workshop!

This full day workshop is aimed at beginners who are looking to learn more about how to hone their dogs nose and try their paw at both Scent Detection and Mantrailing.

The day will start off with a theory session about your dogs super sniffer and an introduction to scent, before spliting into two small groups and taking part in one of the scent activities in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

What is Mantrailing?
Mantrailing is a dog sport teaching dogs to find people by following their unique scent. Mantrailing harnesses a dogs natural ability to trail by channeling it into searching for a person which we want them to find. Emma from Paws4Sports will be your Mantrailing Instructor.

What is Scent Detection?
Scent Detection teaches your dog to search for and locate a specific scent by harnessing their natural hunting skills into a fun activity to enjoy together. Jo Brooke from Positively Canine will be your Scent Detection Instructor.

Both Mantrailing & Scent Detection are both low impact sports, which unlike some dog sports, means there is less pressure and stress on your dogs joints allowing puppies, older dogs and those who need more careful exercise management to still join in on the fun.

Please note: Due to dogs working individually at times throughout the workshop, your dog must be happy to settle in your vehicle between goes. The venue is private and we will be working nearby.

The Workshop is being held at Positively Canine, Bank Top Farm, Northallerton, DL63TQ

£100 per dog & handler team. Limited spaces.

Instructions

Here's everything you need to know ahead of the workshop:

What to bring on the day:

  • Weather appropriate clothing ( with pockets where possible, or bring a bumbag so your hands can be kept free! ), including sturdy footwear. We will be working both inside and outdoors.

  • A collar and lead. No slip leads please as they are too restrictive to work with.

  • A dog harness. If you don’t have a spare harness you can use, we have a selection of sport specific harnesses available to borrow on the day for the workshop. A long-line will also will be provided for you to use at the session where needed.

  • High value (!!) dog treats e.g.: Fish cake, liver cake, favourite wet food, pate, cheese, etc. – You wouldn’t work for free! So make sure your dog loves the reward so they feel the work is worth the payment. If you think you have enough treats, double it!

  • If your dog is ball/toy-crazy, please bring the most favourite. If you are not sure, bring multiple ones.

  • Bring water and a bowl.

  • Bring a scent article with you for you for the Mantrailing part of the workshop e.g. a small scarf, headband, glove, bandana, etc. Please put it in a small, re-sealable bag.

  • In case of heat, please be prepared to cover your car/ windows with a screen cover/ silver screen and bring appropriate necessities to keep your dogs cool. We will be working the dogs one by one during part of the workshop; therefore, it is necessary that the dogs can wait safely in the car until it is their turn (the venue is private and we will be working close by).

Ahead of the workshop, we would just like to bring to your attention to some rules and ask that you consider them at all times.

  • You are responsible for Health and Safety for you, your dog and everyone around you.

  • You must make sure your dog is secure and under control at all times.

  • Please do not forget to pick up after your dogs at all times.
