UK phonics expert Debbie Hepplewhite will provide a two-day professional development course on synthetic phonics teaching based on the 'Phonics International' programme, the 'Oxford Reading Tree Floppy’s Phonics Sounds and Letters' programme and 'No Nonsense Phonics Skills'.

Debbie is currently working with an international partner and hopes to have a new, innovative and interactive phonics programme (accessible on mobile devices as well as desktops and laptops) launched by the time the course comes around

This two day training event will:

-Explore the importance of, and perception of, the role of phonics for reading and spelling in the English language from the individual’s perspective to the global picture

-Embrace the history of the English language and its subsequent complex English alphabetic code with learners from as young as four year olds and for all ages, in all contexts, using a positive ethos and Debbie’s ‘two-pronged systematic and incidental phonics’ teaching and learning approach utilising the Alphabet Code Chart

-Explain the Systematic Synthetic Phonics Teaching Principles in depth (what they are and what they’re not) and why and how they provide the best way to teach reading, spelling and writing in English alongside vocabulary enrichment, language comprehension and grammar

-Clarify the relationship between decoding text (for word recognition), language comprehension and the role of literature (the Simple View of Reading) reflecting on learners’ reading profiles (and consider the usefulness of the Simple View of Writing diagram reflecting on learners’ writing profiles) – plus an evaluation of ‘miscue analysis’ (the ‘running record’) in light of research findings

-Enhance your personal knowledge of the complexities of the English alphabetic code including the pronunciation of the sounds (phonemes) to fully appreciate what is involved in teaching the letter/s-sound correspondences of the English alphabetic code both systematically and incidentally for all ages and contexts including multi-lingual contexts

-Include very specific information and guidance for professional development and highly practical management of teaching within a range of different contexts: the Teaching and Learning Cycle; distinguishing between the alphabetic code and the alphabet; the Phonics (hand) Routines; preparation, use, monitoring, marking, compiling and revisiting of core essential resources; handwriting as an integral part of the learning; discerning between fit-for-purpose multi-sensory activities and ‘extraneous’ activities; visual display; time scales and pace; classroom management (groups or whole class, groups within the class); seating arrangements; differentiation; assessment; intervention; English as a new or additional language; working in partnerships with learners themselves and various supporting adults including parents; ensuring consistency and continuity year on year progressing to a spelling programme (learning specific words, constantly referring to ‘spelling alternatives’, introducing various stable spelling rules, dictionary work, building up knowledge of spelling word banks in which words are spelt with the same letter/s-sound correspondences)

-Provide opportunities to discuss how to incorporate best practice synthetic phonics into your specific teaching situation – including individual conversations with Debbie who will make suggestions for your own way forwards in your context

-All course attendees will receive a FREE 12 month licence to access the online Phonics International Programme

-A 'Certificate of Attendance' will be awarded on completion.

Some Testimonials from Previous Courses

"Thanks for a great 2 days. I enjoyed every minute of it and feel more confident now with PI. Regards to Abigail and thank you both again for organizing and carrying out the course. Do more!!....keep up the great work and I'll spread the synthetic phonics as much as possible here in Spain"

"I am totally committed to securing Phonics International throughout our school and hope to use this as the training ground for my NPQH next year - management can be so frustrating when it's all so close and yet some teachers just don't get the bigger picture! Still this is a brilliant tool that not only will benefit the children, parents and school but also enhance my leadership skills - THANK YOU SO MUCH"

"Just to say how much I enjoyed and learnt from the event. Having been involved in tutor/training at a staff college previously I could not fault the delivery of your programme."
