Then come and join The Playground Community. We aim to build a creative and playful environment which is representative of the diverse artistic community in London.

The Playground is a free monthly event supported and held at Rambert studios, one Friday a month from 18:30 – 21:00. See below for the choreographers for November- please select the ticket for the studio you would like to sign up for on booking.

Rambert Studio: Susan Kempster

Susan Kempster is a choreographer, performer, teacher, theatre maker and movement coach/director. Her career has taken her from Sydney, Australia to Tokyo, New York, Madrid, Barcelona and London.TRIOS. For this session we will be working with partnering and contact. Mainly trios, maybe duos and trios. One of the things we've missed the most in the last 18 months is contact with others. In my first session at the Playground, back in 2018, I was working on some group partnering and in this session I come back to some similar starting points of contact - I'm still obsessed by the same ideas, but my understanding of them has shifted. We will explore improvised partnering through to the setting of some short sections. There will be some tasks to help establish connection and shared understanding and we'll go from there. https://www.susankempster.com

Stephanie D. Handjiiska is a Bulgarian choreographer and film director, based in South West London. Stephanie's work explores femininity, darkness, sex, colour, capitalism and freedom across film and stage. https://stephaniehandjiiska.com In this piece I would like to explore the idea of group movement and power. What happens when we powerfully move and breathe as one, when we create unison, only to break free from it? Assistant Choreographer: Elena Marinova

Mercury Studio: Helen Robertson

Helen Robertson is a London based artist and Lecturer at Central Saint Martins and Camberwell College of Arts, The University of the Arts London. We will work with a choreographic exploration of an imagined architectural site using Lilly Reich and Mies van der Rohe’s Velvet and Silk Café (Berlin 1927) as a point of departure. The café was a temporary structure in which planes of suspended Velvet and Silk became architecture. Danced movement will explore the quality of the structure, its sensuality and impermanence, enacting the imagined flow of people through the space and shifting configurations of the cafe chairs and tables.www.helenrobertson.net

Kleinwort Studio: Jamaal Burkmar

!Updated time! This session will now run from 6:30pm - 8:30pm.Jamaal Burkmar @Extended_PlayChoreographer & Dance ArtistJamaal Burkmar is an internationally award-winning choreographer whose first creation was as a second year student at the Northern School for Contemporary Dance (NSCD) where he created a piece entitled Ocean. The success of this piece led to Jamaal being awarded the highly prestigious ‘New Adventures Choreography Award’. He has since been commissioned by and received support from the Dance Hub in Birmingham, Leeds Dance Partnership, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Mobius Dance, and more. Jamaal's work has a strong relationship to music and sits in many spaces, outdoor, theatrical and online. I'm going to be testing and stretching at our currently established method of making and playing within the process that me and my dancers call "How To Build A Universe". I'm wanting to take a look at how set movement material between groups of dancers, might be able to appear and disappear seamlessly in improvisational performance, without it needing to be forced or wedged into the stories/relationships that are naturally happening between those dancers in those performances.https://www.instagram.com/extendedplaydance/
