“Tension can’t be stretched – it needs time, care and safety to unravel”
Donna Farhi

In this workshop, we will bring our attention to how we hold tension in the body, mind and breath. Using breathing practices (Pranayama) gentle movement, postures (Asana) and meditation (Yoga Nidra), we will be invited into a deep listening to what our bodies might have to tell us, and in so doing, find more space and a greater ease from which to breathe, move, and live our lives.

The workshop is for everyone with no prior experience of yoga necessary and you don’t even need to be a particularly anxious or nervous person to experience the benefits!
My hope is that the workshop will leave all of us feeling deeply relaxed, restored and rejuvenated.

In some of my classes recently, we have been focussing on the Psoas muscle – a muscle known as the stress muscle, or the fight or flight muscle. When our Psoas is tight or neglected from too much sitting down or by pushing into overdrive (running, walking or just through accumulated nervous tension), without corresponding muscular release, we can feel irritable, our breathing can be restricted and we may feel pain in our low back, hips and even digestive system.

Donna Farhi calls the Psoas a “Truly Yogic muscle as it serves to unify the body”: it allows for a fuller breath, it balances the nervous system and allows for healthy organ function. It is interesting, for example, that our solar plexus, which is a hub of nerves, is the approximate level at which the diaphragm and Psoas meet, hence the relationship between this stress muscle and our breathing.

And I must thank a couple of regular students for suggesting this focus on Psoas strengthening and release this term.

I hope you’ll join me!
