The Handgun Safety Awareness Course is run by Victoria Police accredited SSPC Firearms Safety Instructors, and is the next step in getting your General Category Handgun license. The course must be also be completed and passed for eligibility in joining the Sporting Shooters Pistol Club.

NOTE: BEFORE being eligible to attend this course,

  1. You must have completed the Introduction to Handguns Course within the last 6 months.

  2. You must have completed and documented in your Introduction to Handguns Book at least 3 NORI shoots.

  3. You must have completed ALL the Level 1 competencies as detailed in your Training for Your Handgun License Book.

The Level 1 Competency Assessment Certificate in the Training for Your Handgun License book MUST be signed by a Training Range Officer BEFORE attending this course.

If you attend this course and do not have your certificates correctly endorsed, you WILL NOT be admitted to the course and forfeit your payment.

The course duration is approximately 4 hours, divided into two sessions, with coffee and tea breaks over lunch available.

Theory in Training Room (about 2 hours)

  • Legislation pertaining to handguns
  • Basic handgun types and actions
  • Basic ballistics including reloading
  • Safe handling of handguns

There will be a written test on the theory component.

Practical in Training Room & On Range (about 2 hours)

  • Safe handling of handguns
  • Making safe a handgun
  • Loading and unloading a handgun
  • Safe clearance of malfunctions
  • Live fire exercise

The bistro is normally open for lunch and light refreshments with Coffee and Tea making is facility available.

The cost of the course is $140.00 which includes range entry, tuition and ammunition.

Please note that you will need to bring with you two forms of ID, one of which must be a photo ID. For example Drivers Licence and Medicare card would be acceptable.

All attendees must submit to visual ID confirmation PRIOR to commencement of courses per Victoria Police and SSPC club requirements.

You also MUST bring your endorsed SSPC Introduction to Handguns AND Training for Your Handgun Licence books that you received on your Introduction to Handguns Course.

On successful completion of this course you will receive an official police handgun safety course certificate. You will need to include a copy this with your SSPC membership application. You will also need a copy when applying for your provisional handgun license.

Course Change Policy: We are able to offer you a refund or a change of course date up to 72 hours before your scheduled course date. To request a refund please email info@sspc.org.au. After this time, no refunds are provided!

If you need to change a booking, you will need to book into a new course AND PAY FOR IT, then email us the OLD and NEW booking reference numbers and we will cancel your old booking and refund your original payment. Remember you only have 4 hours within which to pay for your booking before it is released back into the pool.
