The Housing Health and Safety Rating System: ~ Online ~

Three training sessions delivered virtually over the course of one week and a feedback session 4 weeks later.
Described as ‘The best HHSRS training available’

The Housing, Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) was introduced in 2006 to provide an assessment tool for the ‘Minimum Standard for Housing’ (Criterion A of the Decent Homes Standard). It is a risk assessment tool designed to identify the risk to occupants in domestic properties. Its main purpose is to support enforcement action against landlords to make improvements to rented properties (using the powers of the Housing Act 2004 (Part 1). It is also used extensively to survey stock condition in social housing, to assess the suitability of accommodation when addressing homelessness, and as a criteria for financial support to assist older and other vulnerable homeowners.

Gordon Hinchcliffe designed and developed the two-day HHSRS course along with environmental health officer colleagues in 2006. He has, since that time, delivered the course to numerous local authorities, housing associations, landlords, managing agents and other interested parties throughout the country both in-house and openly for Foundations. Feedback from delegates regularly indicates that the training experienced on this programme not only gives then an excellent working knowledge of the HHSRS but is also enjoyable and stimulating.

Sessions 1,2 & 3: HHSRS Inspection and Assessment
This one-day course is designed to provide delegates with a thorough understanding of the principles and process behind the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and with the skills required to carry out of inspection of properties that will identify the presence of any of the 29 hazards identified by the HHSRS.

To enable delegates to carry out HHSRS Assessments with the required levels of consistency and accuracy, delegates will be required to undertake a programme of self-study following the training session. The materials required for that self-study will be provided at the end on the training session.

Session 4 - Feedback Session 4 weeks later: HHSRS Competency Assessment
To provide the client with an assurance that those delegates who attend the HHSRS Inspection and Assessment course, have fully understood the assessment process and are able in practice of undertaking HHSRS Assessments with the appropriate levels of accuracy and consistency.  Foundations provide a follow-up workshop to moderate HHSRS assessments carried out by their staff and, in the event that those assessments have been carried out to the required levels of accuracy, award a Certificate of Professional Competence to those staff.

Recent feedback: “When the subject of the course came up in conversation - you did a superb job of teaching the HHSRS course, and I'd recommend it to anyone. You turned a complex and potentially confusing subject into a clear, concise and easily understood series of steps which most people could understand. Loved it!”
