This course, run in partnership with Shelter Training, provides a complete introduction and overview of Universal Credit. It includes how amounts are worked out, claimed and paid.

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand the background to Universal Credit and why it is being introduced;
  • Know who is eligible for Universal Credit including how the ‘gateway conditions’ operate;
  • Know how Universal Credit affects the wider benefits system;
  • Know how the 'cultural aspects' of Universal Credit affect claimants who continue to receive a payment from the old system;
  • Understand how Universal Credit amounts are worked out;
  • Be able to understand a typical Universal Credit award letter;
  • Be able to help people who cannot manage a single monthly payment of benefit;
  • Understand work-related conditions for Universal Credit and how to deal with sanctions'
  • Be able to advise people affected by the cap on total benefits;
  • Be able to initiate an appeal;
  • Have access to advice regarding any Universal Credit question for 12 months after the course.

This course is accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and is relevant to anyone who works with claimants of working age.
