This course (formerly known as Housing Benefit: The Problem Areas) run in partnership with national housing charity Shelter, focuses on the more complicated areas of Housing Benefit and how to challenge decisions effectively.

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Be able to advise on the claims process including the evidence requirements;
  • Understand the exempt accommodation rules;
  • Be aware of typical errors made by Housing Benefit decision makers when assessing claims which include a non-dependant is present;
  • Understand the most effective options for social landlord tenants affected by an under-occupancy reduction;
  • Understand the temporary absence and two homes rules for Housing Benefit;
  • Know when a Housing Benefit overpayment is non-recoverable;
  • Be able to challenge decisions effectively using supersessions, revisions and appeals;
  • Have access to advice regarding any course-related question for 12 months after the course.

This is a practical course. It is delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, group work and exercises, case studies, group discussion and games.

This course is relevant to anyone who has experience of working with tenants of a council, housing association or private landlord. Staff new to housing are advised to book onto either our Housing Benefit & DHPs or Introduction to Welfare Benefits courses first.
