Universal Credit (UC) is the main means-tested benefit for people of working age, whether they are in work or out of work. This course explores who should claim UC, how awards are calculated, how to manage a claim, and what claimants must do to avoid problems such as sanctions.

UNIVERSAL CREDIT OVERVIEW, Part 1:
Aims
This part of the course covers the main eligibility rules for Universal Credit and explains how awards are calculated. Participants will explore the key rules on age, capital, students, and people from abroad, before moving on to the structure of a UC award and how the maximum amount is worked out.

• Explain the capital limits for Universal Credit and recognise when capital may be disregarded.
• Recognise the main student restrictions in Universal Credit.

• Recognise when certain elements cannot be paid together in the same award.

• Understand how different forms of income affect a UC award.
• Be able to use online tools to calculate UC and anticipate the make-up of an award.
