Join me to learn a whole new set of skills to take your adventures onto the winter clad mountains.
Developing your personal winter skills to move confidently with the use of ice axe and crampons, we will also briefly cover navigating in the winter environment.
You'll leave from the day with a basic awareness of avalanche risks and the winter mountain environment that leave you ready for your own wintery mountain adventures.
The day will cover:
•Personal movement skills on snow
•Kicking steps
•Using the ice axe for winter walking
•Use of crampons in ascent/descent
•Basic avalanche awareness and route choice
•Emergency procedures
•Basic techniques of winter navigation
•Personal clothing and equipment appropriate to winter walking
You are going to learn how to be comfortable, whilst being uncomfortable! That, is a fundamental part of winter, along with learning to be bothered!
The day will take place in an appropriate part of the Lake District, conditions will dictate location. Usually though, Helvellyn or Blencathra will be used.

You will need to have the following:
•Waterproof jacket & waterproof trousers
•Stiff mountaineering boots - B2 or B3 boots (available for hire from myself. Please discuss upon booking £15)
•Gaiters (recommended to keep snow out of your boots)
•Leggings / softshell / hiking trousers (NOT cotton)
•Thermal base layer (wool or synthetic (NOT cotton)
•Fleece or equivalent mid layer(s)
•Spare warm insulated jacket, (ideally synthetic but down is ok)
•Hat or balaclava
•Buff or neck warmer
•Warm waterproof gloves (two pairs ideally, bring whatever gloves you have)
•Ski goggles
•30 - 40ltr rucksack
•Flask or water bottle. (You can use a Hydration bladder, but be aware they freeze in winter)
•Compass
•Mountaineering axe (I can provide for hire £10)
•Mountaineering crampons (I can provide for hire £10)
•Climbing helmet (I can provide)
•Snow shovel (not essential, but if you have one bring it along)
•Walking poles (not essential, but they can help with balance and descending)
•Head torch and batteries.
•Lunch & snacks
Full winter set hire of boots, crampons and axe £25.
In case of inclement weather meaning dangerous driving conditions. The course will reschedule.
If snow conditions are lacking, we shall take winter kit out and learn as much as possible regardless.
