Explorer Sessions: What to Expect
Sessions are held outdoors in the beautiful wooded area at Millthorpe School (Nunthorpe Avenue, YO23 1WF). Wild Things is all about playing, exploring, and learning in nature—whether it's building a den, playing in the mud kitchen, hammering, pond dipping, or taking part in nature-inspired crafts. We encourage children to take safe, managed risks, which helps build resilience and confidence.
As the weather gets colder, outdoor play becomes even more important for you & your child's wellbeing. It's a great way to stay active, connect with nature, and boost mood during the winter months. We adapt our sessions to keep everyone comfortable and engaged:
• First part of the session: Free play and exploration.
• Campfire time: We gather around the campfire to enjoy a campfire treat & hot chocolate.
• Outdoor games: After the campfire, Emma will lead fun, active games to keep us moving and warm. If your child has had enough after the campfire, you're welcome to leave early. We aim to be flexible to your family's needs.
Please note that children may be more sensitive to cold if they haven’t had enough sleep or are hungry, so we recommend coming prepared with snacks and appropriate clothing. Our sessions are designed to be flexible so you can leave when you feel it’s right for your child.
Wild Things is run by Emma, an experienced primary school teacher and Level 3 Forest School trained leader, with support from Michelle, our Wild Things Assistant.
We look forward to exploring nature together!
What to Wear and Bring:
To make you & your child stays comfortable and warm, please dress them in layers and wear the following items:
*Thermal leggings & top
*Tracksuit bottoms or leggings
*Long-sleeved top
*Fleece jumper/top
*Warm coat
*Fleece-lined waterproof trousers or an all-in-one suit
*Neoprene or lined wellies or walking boots (regular wellies can be cold)
*2 pairs of thin socks
*Hat, snood, and gloves
*Spare clothes (just in case!)
Be prepared for your child to get muddy, and possibly covered in paint, glue, and other fun, messy materials!
Weather Policy:
Wild Things runs in almost all weather conditions—rain, snow, or sunshine. The only exceptions are gusty winds or storms, as safety is our top priority. If the forecast predicts high winds, we'll adapt by moving indoors to a nearby community room, where we can still enjoy some of our outdoor activities, such as a welcome song, nature crafts, stories, and hot chocolate (with mini marshmallows!). You’ll be notified of any location or timing changes via text in advance.
Cups & Towels:
Please bring a travel cup for you and your child for hot drinks, as well as a small towel for drying hands.
Arrival & Departure:
Sessions start at 10am until 11.15am. Please refer to the updated T&Cs and guidance for details on arrivals and departures.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Emma
