Lowland Leader

This nationally recognised walking qualification scheme has been designed for people who wish to lead groups on day walks in lowland countryside and woodland in summer conditions. The scheme opens up a natural pathway to other awards and qualifications for leading and working with others in the outdoors.

Checklist for booking

  • You must be at least 17 years old
  • You have an interest in leading groups in lowland countryside
  • Create a Candidate account on Mountain Training’s website
  • Register for the Lowland Leader scheme and pay your registration fee to Mountain Training
  • Record a minimum of 10 varied walks in Lowland terrain before attending a training course OR have attended a Mountain Training Hill & Mountain Skills course

We offer a 2 day (16 hour) training course, inclusive of time out practically with your group as well as some inside sessions to discuss further topics.

Lowland Leaders should be competent in the following key areas, all of which will be covered during your 2 day training course:

  • Leadership skills and group management
  • Walking skills
  • Planning a walk
  • Basic map and route finding skills
  • Equipment
  • Hazards and emergency procedures
  • Environmental awareness, conservation, access and land ownership
