What makes Gary Ward’s work unique is his interest in observing and working with the body when it is upright and in motion. Where classic anatomy (which we all learn regardless of discipline) is based on anatomy laying on a couch and getting feedback from dead people ;)
This is known as the open chain and takes into account your anatomy at isolated joints irrespective of the relationship it might have with another structure. When you lay on your back you can flex your hip and not move or need any other joints…. If you flex your hip when stood upright on the ground, every single joint must come into play just to remain balanced and upright. Your hip has a relationship with every other body part in this way.
Gary’s work is all based in the Closed Chain; when the foot is on the ground we have the opportunity to observe all of the bones and joints to see how they interact with each other. When one joint moves, everything moves and it’s understanding the inter-relationships between all of the structures that make a huge difference in your understanding of a person’s physical situation, and more importantly greatly helps them too.

Over the three days you will be both seated and moving, so please do come in clothes that are suitable for both.
