Rhythms of Wellbeing – Community Drum Circle

Details

Join BCA and Frame Drummer and Drum Circle Facilitator Jackie Drew for a fun and enlivening Drum Circle.

What is a community drum circle?

An informal and friendly get together to make ‘in-the-moment’ rhythmic music, with drums and other percussion. We play most of the drums with our hands and you can play with any of the drums, shakers, bells and other instruments provided in the sessions.

This is not a ‘technique’ class and no previous drumming experience is needed. We will use the drums and percussion to create sounds and rhythms that can be deeply relaxing and calming and energising too! As drum circle facilitator, I gently guide participants into the session to find and play rhythmic patterns together, creating connections and sharing time away from the demands of day-to-day life. Some people think they have no rhythm – just come along and discover how drum circles can create a safe space to find your own inner rhythm that you may not realise you have.

Taking part in a drum circle can help improve physical and mental wellbeing, and is great fun! All adults (age 18+) are welcome and remember – there are no ‘wrong’ notes – just variations. All drums and percussion are provided.

Jackie Drew

Jackie began drumming over 17 years ago, learning culturally specific rhythms (Arabic, Egyptian, Mediterranean and beyond) on darbuka; she studied and played West African rhythms (Senegalese and Malian) on djembe and bass drums (dun, sanban and kenkeni) and in recent years, developed a deep connection to the handheld frame drum, which she studies, practises and teaches. Jackie has studied in person and online with internationally known and highly respected teachers, and is grateful to all her teachers for their patience, generosity, in-depth teaching and encouragement. In October 2022, Jackie completed the UK Village Music Playshop intensive drum circle facilitation training and began running regular community drum circles through Northumberland Recovery College. In Oct, 2023, she undertook further, intensive training on running drum circles (a more organic and less formal experience for participants) and continues to deliver regular drum circles for many voluntary and community sector organisations.
