SUMMER: Life Drawing into Painting with Anton Chapman

Aimed at beginners and those who wish to rejuvenate their practice, this intensive three-day course focuses on working directly from the life model — through both drawing and painting.

Drawing lies at the heart of all artistic practice. Whether you work in abstraction, realism, photography, or conceptual art, drawing offers a direct and intimate means of engaging with ideas. Through this process, artists deepen their understanding of the world and cultivate a reflective, creative mindset.

Taught from both painterly and graphic perspectives, the course begins with the principle of painting as drawing with the brush. From there, students are guided to develop their observational and technical skills, moving fluidly between line, tone, and colour.

Participants are encouraged to look closely and work with focused attention, preparing the ground for authentic artistic discovery. The brush or pencil becomes an extension of the eye, tracing the figure not as mere picture-making, but as a way of learning to see — measuring not just form, but the ideals we seek in art.
