"One must paint with the outer eye and inner eye, backward and forward, inside out and upside down, sideways, as a metaphysical aeroplane might go”. Eileen Agar.

This course will explore the vibrant medium of contemporary watercolour. Over 9 classes, we will investigate ways to create dynamic compositions through the use of line, colour, texture and form, building rhythm and balance. Learn to harness both the potential for glowing delicacy and the deep expressive power of this fascinating medium.

Each week we will start the class by looking at artists who have worked with watercolour to great effect and discuss art historical references to highlight concepts and techniques. We will then experiment with similar painting techniques and approaches. Technical demonstrations and one-to-one feedback and guidance will be given. There will be time allocated across the course to develop a series of paintings focused on your own personal areas of interest. We will also explore collage techniques as a tool to stimulate visual ideas, allowing the freedom to cut and juxtapose imagery to build compositions.

The course is suitable for both beginners and those who wish to work further with the medium within their practice.

NB: Please remember to bring materials from the course materials list online

and will provide student discounts if you mention that you are attending the school.

The stores we recommend are:
• Studio Art Supplies: Crummer Road, Grey Lynn.
• The French Art Shop: Taylors Road, Morningside (beside Briscoes)
• Gordon Harris: Gillies Avenue, Newmarket and Symonds Street, Auckland Central
• Takapuna Art Supplies: Helensville or online

Materials to bring:
• Watercolour pad A4 (for experiments) recommended: Fabriano 1264 W/Colour 300G A4 Top Spiral Pad (30) (available at Gordon Harris and Studio Art Supplies).
• Watercolour block, recommended: Hahnemühle Hahn Harmony W/C 300G block 4 sides glued A3
(can be purchased after the first class as you will need to decide to buy either hot press or cold press paper, the differences will be discussed in class).
• Flat butter / pallet knife: to separate each page from the watercolour block as required
• Watercolour brushes of your choice: at least 3 different brushes
Recommended: a round, and a flat watercolour brush (synthetic or real hair ok)
Your tutor will bring in some brushes to demonstrate the different varieties available
• Painter’s tape: delicate (purple-coloured tape)
• A rag: to dry brushes between changing colours

If you are not sure, bring what you have, and by the end of the first lesson you will know what you would like to work with. The 3 primary colours (red, yellow, blue) are a good start. Both tube colours and pans are good (it comes down to personal preference).
• Gouache in at least 1 colour, and acrylic ink in at least 1 colour (these can be purchased after the first few classes and will be discussed with tutor).
• A craft knife for precision cutting of paper materials, and a small metal ruler for cutting
