This two-day workshop will focus on drypoint and multi-plate printmaking. We will cover the finer techniques, demonstrating good ink applications, colour roll-up and chine-collé*.

You will need to come prepared with any visual reference material that you wish to refer to in the development of the printed image. This may be by way of drawings or photographic imagery.

For the beginning printer, the course offers a perfect introduction to the exciting world of print. Additionally, it operates as an ideal refresher course for those who have had prior experience.

Drypoint is one of the most direct of all Intaglio techniques. A sharp drypoint needle and a metal plate or plexie plate are all the materials required. The image is produced by scoring the surface with a sharp needle to create a burr. When the burr is new, the print is rich with cross hatching creating a velvety, black richness. A selection of tools also allow different marks and tonal variations to add visual drama to your image.

*Chine-collé is a special technique in printmaking, in which the image is transferred to a surface that is bonded to a heavier support in the printing process. One purpose is to allow the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese paper or linen, which pulls finer details off the plate.
