Shunyata Improvisation Group bring their extraordinary style of music to the Byker
Arts Festival: intimate, distinct, quiet, acoustic and entirely composed in the moment.
Inspired by Zen approaches to art, emphasising spaciousness, the group explores
both melody and sound. Playing long form for 3 hours they will weave improvisations
in and out of silence.
They are joined in this performance by two outstanding improvisers John Pope a
virtuoso double bass player and the accomplished improvising soprano Katie Oswell.
The performance takes place in the centre of the room with the audience encircling
the musicians providing a quietly intense listening experience. Audience members
are free to come and go as they please, move to different parts of the room, take
breaks. leave and return or come for any part of the performance.
This will be a memorable event where music and sound will spontaneously evolve
and transform, rising and falling throughout the evening, providing an immersive
meditative experience.
“Yesterday’s performance was one of the most emotionally uplifting pieces I have EVER
heard…… perfect sounds in a perfect atmosphere.” Andy Wood, Editor TQ ZINE describing a
previous long form Shunyata Improvisation Group performance.
