Session 1 – Meaningful Learning
Teaching the curriculum outside the classroom

This course is aimed at those who are already taking some lessons outside the classroom, but would like more support and information on how to get the most out of LOtC.

Research shows that learning outside the classroom (LOtC) is more beneficial when it is planned and integrated into the school curriculum. This course will look at how to move beyond offering occasional and one-off experiences, and ensure that LOtC is a regular and core- part of curriculum delivery.

It will also give you the information and ideas you need to help convince colleagues, parents and governors of the value of LOtC for pupil and school development.

Over the half-day session you will:
• Look at some of the research into the benefits of LOtC
• Think about why it is beneficial to integrate LOtC with the curriculum
• Audit your current LOtC provision
• Develop LOtC lesson plans linked to curriculum outcomes
• Try some simple LOtC activities and use these to develop your own ideas
• Find out where to go for more resources and ideas to support your LOtC
• Get a general introduction to LOtC Mark
You will leave with lots of ideas and resources to support your development and to share with colleagues back at school.

Session 2 – LOtC: Policies and Practice
Making the most of opportunities beyond the classroom

This course is aimed at schools who want to move beyond individual teachers delivering learning outside the classroom (LOtC) and towards a whole-school approach to LOtC. For this to happen, LOtC needs to be embedded in school policies and practice, and supported by the whole school community.

This course uses the framework of LOtC Mark, the only national accreditation for schools which recognises and supports the development of LOtC, to identify good practice in LOtC. It also draws on Ofsted guidance and good practice examples for LOtC to identify the key features of successful LOtC provision.

Over the half-day session, you will:
• Think about what LOtC means for your school
• Consider the key features of an LOtC policy
• Look at the Ofsted report on LOtC, How Far Should You Go? and subsequent Ofsted guidance
• Think about how to monitor and evaluate LOtC
• Learn about the risk-benefit model of risk management
• Develop an action plan to embed LOtC at your school
• Explore how the LOtC Mark framework can support your school’s development and get advice on how you can achieve the award.

The two sessions are designed to be progressive. Session 2 will build on what has been learnt in session 1; however, you are welcome to attend either course singly if that better suits your needs.
Both courses are offered on the same day at the same venue, to enable you to attend both

Additional Info: Tea/coffee will be provided. We aren’t able to offer lunch - please bring your own supplies, or use the onsite cafe or nearby venues.
