Under the guidance of experienced NNAS tutors learn the essential basics of map reading during a half day outdoors to give you the skills you need to confidently find your way around the countryside. We will start with a basic introduction to maps before heading outside to learn basic techniques including:

  • orientating the map
  • using obvious handrails
  • understanding map features and symbols
  • measuring distances,timing and pacing
  • safety,kit choices and the Countryside Code No experience necessary and you are welcome to join up if you want to brush up on your existing knowledge. Maps and compasses will be provided for use during the course period but you can bring your own if you have them.( OS Explorer 171 Chiltern Hills West) You can discuss progession to more advance navigation or the bronze or silver NNAS awards with us on the day.
