In this course we will employ a range of mediums in the development of a personal abstract visual language of line, colour, shape and form. Abstract works exist along a continuum, with a degree of independence from visual references in the world which can be slight, partial or complete. Together we will explore ways to engage with this realm of art-making with an experimental and playful approach.
Each week we will begin the class by looking at the work of an artist working with abstraction and discuss art historical references to highlight concepts and techniques. We will then experiment with similar drawing and painting techniques and approaches in different mediums, ranging from graphite and ink, to watercolour and acrylic, using predominantly paper and canvas as our painting supports. Time will be allocated across the course to develop a series of paintings focused on your own visual language and specific areas of interest.
The course is suitable for both beginners and those who wish to work further with abstraction within their practice.
