Ever watched a pot magically appear on a spinning wheel? Now it’s your turn.
This six-week course is designed for complete beginners and will take you through every stage of learning to throw. Working in a small group of just three students, you’ll receive plenty of individual guidance as you develop one of pottery’s most rewarding skills.
During the course, you’ll learn:
• How the pottery wheel works
• Preparing and wedging clay
• Centring clay
• Pulling cylinders
• Making cups and bowls
• Trimming and finishing your pieces
• Decorating with slips and texture
• Using underglazes and glazes
• Preparing your work for firing
Every session includes demonstrations, plenty of hands-on making time and individual support from your tutor.
By the end of the course, you’ll understand the fundamentals of wheel throwing and have created your own collection of functional ceramics to take home.
Your course includes:
• Six weekly sessions of 2.5 hours + with one extra session for glazing on a Friday Evening.
• Small-group teaching with a maximum of three people
• All clay, tools and equipment
• Glazes and firing
• Tea, coffee and biscuits
• Your finished pieces to collect once fired
No previous pottery experience is needed. Throwing takes practice, so come prepared to embrace the wobbles, enjoy the process and get thoroughly muddy!
Niveau: Beginner

What to wear
Pottery can be wonderfully messy! Please wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little clay on. Closed toe shoes are essential for safety, and we recommend tying back long hair. Short nails can also make working with clay a little easier, but don't worry if yours aren't!

You may wish to bring:

During the course
This course is designed for beginners, so no previous pottery experience is needed.
Everyone learns at a different pace, and our aim is to create a welcoming, supportive and relaxed studio where you can enjoy learning, experimenting and developing your confidence with clay.
Please be respectful of fellow students, tutors and the shared studio space so everyone has the best possible experience.
Accessibility
We want Henfield Pottery to be welcoming and accessible to as many people as possible.
If you have a disability, long term health condition, neurodivergence, injury or anything else that may affect your experience, please let us know before the course begins. Wherever reasonably possible, we'll work with you to make suitable adjustments.
Refreshments
Tea, coffee and biscuits are available during the session. You're also welcome to bring your own drinks as long as they're consumed in our break room.
Collecting your work
Pottery takes time! Your pieces will need to dry before being fired, glazed and fired again.
We'll let you know when your work is ready to collect. This is usually within 3–6 weeks of the final session, depending on drying times and kiln schedules.
