Detaljer

The National Curriculum for history requires pupils to gain understanding about abstract concepts of substantive knowledge across periods while the OFSTED framework expects to see teaching in greater depth than before. This practical series of webinars will show how pupils can be introduced to these concepts which can then be systematically revisited wherever they occur in content, ensuring that pupils accumulate powerful knowledge around it for retrieval as they progress through medium term plans.
You can sign up for as many or as few workshops as you like, depending on need.

Workshop - 1st December 2022
Identifying curriculum pathways through Primary History at KS1 and KS2: Empire
This practical webinar will show how pupils can be introduced to the concept of empire and which can then be systematically revisited wherever it occurs in content, ensuring that pupils accumulate powerful knowledge around it for retrieval as they progress through medium term plans. Reference will be made to the possible study of significant individuals at KS1 such as Christopher Columbus who helped to found the Spanish Empire in the Americas and Mary Seacole, a British-Jamaican nurse who travelled from the then British colony of Jamaica to help British troops fighting in the Crimean War in the middle of the 19th century. An overview will be given of the development of empires over time taking in ancient civilisations, Ancient Greece, the Romans, Vikings and including the curricular options of Islamic civilisations and Benin. Links will be made to the optional study of aspects of British Imperial history beyond 1066 such as commemoration of Commonwealth forces in the world wars, the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the Battle of Britain.

The sessions will be led by Andrew Wrenn, a knowledgeable history specialist and an honorary fellow of the Historical Association. He is an experienced teacher, trainer and writer, former LA adviser and co-author of the HA`s report on Teaching Emotive and Controversial History 3-19. Andrew recently led highly evaluated training on the impact of the new OFSTED framework on Primary History
