Guided Tour: History and Architecture of the ZB

The Zentralbibliothek Zürich has served as the cantonal, city, and university library of Zurich for more than 100 years. With over 7.5 million items and around 240 employees, it is one of the largest libraries in Switzerland. Its extensive collections are complemented by a wide range of databases and digital full-text resources. Nearly one million people visit the ZB each year and make use of its diverse services.

During this guided tour, you will learn about the origins and development of the ZB and explore various parts of the building. As the historic main building from 1917 (designed by architect Hermann Fietz) is currently closed due to ongoing renovation work, the tour focuses on the Predigerchor from the 14th century and the extension building from the 1990s (designed by architects Alex and Heinz Eggimann). In the Predigerchor, you will visit the music reading room beneath the Gothic vaulted ceiling and the historic staircase dating from 1919. In the extension building, highlights include the large reading room, the Turicensia Lounge, and the underground book stacks.
