A practical day workshop
Have you ever thought about spending a night out on Dartmoor but felt unsure where to start? Or wondered what it is like to sleep under the stars in wild terrain or wake up to a magnificent sunrise? Are you earning to seek new adventure or extend your hikes?
This friendly, informative day workshop is designed to introduce you to backpack camping giving you the confidence, knowledge and practical understanding to camp safely, comfortably and responsibly in the moorlands of Dartmoor and beyond.
The session covers the essentials of carrying everything you need on your back without over packing, choosing suitable shelters and sleep systems, understanding Dartmoor’s unique weather and terrain, bylaws, and camping in a way that respects both the landscape and other moor users.
This workshop will cover
You’ll learn about:
· Legal and responsible backpack camping on Dartmoor
· Rucksack choice, packing systems and weight management
· Shelter options (tents, tarps and bivvies) and site selection
· Sleep systems and staying warm overnight
· Food, water and cooking stoves
· Weather awareness and decision-making
· Camp craft basics and Leave No Trace principles
· Common beginner mistakes and how to avoid them
· Camp etiquette
· Route planning, basic navigation and safety.
No experience needed, you are welcome to bring your own backpack gear.
There will be an outdoors camp craft session to explore different types of tent set ups
Come prepaid with a notebook and pen and a packed lunch .
