One of Dartmoor’s most precious and biodiverse habitats is temperate rainforest. This walk takes us round the perimeter of one of these special oakwoods, so fragile that we will admire it from the edge rather than risk damaging it by entering. The twisted oaks are clothed in green moss, ferns creeping along their branches and lichens draped from their twiggy tips. Our circular route then takes us up through open heathland and along a broad ridge linking the rocky Littaford and Crockern Tors before dropping back down to Two Bridges Hotel, where a delicious cream tea awaits us at 5pm.
